What foam density means
Originally published September 19, 2026.
Density is measured in pounds per cubic foot and tells you how much material is actually in the foam. It has nothing to do with firmness: a dense foam can be soft, a light one can be hard. It has everything to do with how long it lasts.
The numbers
For memory foam: below about 3 lb per cubic foot it develops a dip within two years; 3 to 5 lb is the range serious mattresses work in; above 5 it becomes very slow to respond and holds heat. For base polyurethane: below 1.5 lb it does not support, and 1.8 to 2.2 lb is the decent normal.
Why you will not find it on the product page
Because it is the one figure that cannot be dressed up. Height can be inflated by adding a pointless layer, the coil count can be raised by making the coils smaller, ‘cooling technology’ cannot be measured at all. Density is a number or it is nothing.
What we do with it
We ask for it in writing, for every layer, before we list a product. If the supplier does not have it, does not know it, or hesitates, the conversation stops there. That is not arrogance — it is the one cheap filter that works.
